“We really aren’t going to talk about the fact I’m a Sovaj?” Kendra sat in the passenger seat of their stolen SUV as they drove back to the funeral home that appeared to be their de facto base of operations for the foreseeable future or until Greenlee was well enough to move. He and Kendra just spent several hours working with Trix to distribute orders to his men for tonight’s raid on the Cahlad, then combing through what remained of the Lilac Avenue warehouse for anything they could salvage. At her suggestion, five teams, a mix of magic users and his men instead of the single team he planned to take, would be on sight tonight. He chose not to mention the fact she was a Sovaj because they had more important things to discuss.

He navigated the car down a busy thoroughfare congested with commuters heading home or stopping to grab a quick order of takeout. The scent of pizza permeated the air in this car, originating from the enormous pile of greasy boxes nestled amongst stacks of hard-sided cases and lumpy duffel bags that filled the rear of the vehicle representing every salvageable piece of equipment they found. The Sovereign destroyed everything else, including his personal vehicle, which was parked in the basement. Repairing his warehouse and restocking his equipment would take several months and cost a small fortune he intended to bill back to the Cahlad. That was tomorrow’s problem. Right now, he needed to focus on the potential problem in the seat next to him. “We can if you want to. Are you performing the duties expected of you to the best of your abilities?”

“You know I am, sir.” Kendra seemed cautious and suspicious without a shred of remorse, most likely expecting to be summarily fired as soon as the immediate danger passed.

“Were you ever tempted to steal one of our artifacts or sabotage a mission?” The temptation to use Herne to gain rare and dangerous artifacts was the main reason he didn’t hire magic users.

“No, sir.”

“Is there anything else to discuss?” Finn checked the road in front of him, then glanced back at the woman who had remained rock solid and loyal despite everything that happened in the past few days, including his alliance with a man she despised. Actions always spoke louder than words and while he did not like the fact she and Blue and Devon lied to him, he understood there was no malice involved. Kendra was here because they all trusted him a great deal. A hint of flattery mingled with the betrayal and anger he processed even now. Ever since Devon walked into Alexander’s life, Finn understood the risk unregistered Sovaj took daily. He would never fault them for doing what they had to do to protect themselves, especially when it harmed no one.

“You must be angry. I’m prepared to offer my resignation.” Kendra looked out the window as they drove past a colorful taco truck in a hardware store parking lot.
